What was I thinking?

In December 2023 I signed up for Run Britannia 2025 and i n May 2024 left my job at Blackrock to give myself a full year to train, unencumbered from the obligations of doing a full-time job. The Run Brit challenge is to complete a 1,030 mile running journey, leaving Land's End on 31/5/25 and arriving at John O'Groats on 4/7/25. In total it will be 31 days of running and four rest days in the five week period. This is not the most direct route between the two ends of the country, rather it is intended to be more scenic by taking in some of the national trails eg South West Coastal Path, Offas Dyke, Wye Valley Way, West Highland Way etc. About half of the route will be on trails and half on roads of some form. Day 5 - Bideford to Exmoor

It's been an up & down sort of ride over the past 24 hours. Last night my Achilles was bad (pain 8/10) and I was worried if I'd be able to continue this morning. Thankfully a few bits of treatment, and elevating helped. This was almost certainly caused by camber in the road for a good chunk of yesterday (a few left Achilles tendon issues across the group) Thankfully this morning it was much improved and the strategy for today was to tape it (anchoring on sole of foot and taping over blisters on heel and up leg. Additionally the plan was to run slower. This has helped and whilst there is still some aggravation it held up well today and is much improved (phew). It was a reminder of quite how challenging this run is, with quite a few of us carrying niggles. For anyone who is injured and/or not hitting cut-offs there is the option of getting "boosted" by bus which a few have done. Day 1 - Land's End to Portreath

It was a good day and first 36 miles in the bag. Now less than 1,000 to go (woohoo). Got to Land's End at 6.30am for obligatory photos before a 7am start. Misty and a bit of drizzle early on but that was quite pleasant. In the morning I ran with David (my new room-mate), Shane and also Polly the pacer who did it in '23. We made good progress up to pitstop 2 & early lunch. Whilst progress was good, we arrived 2 hrs before the time the RNLI were comfortable with us wading across Hayle River / Estuary. There was the offer of a minibus ride round the Estuary from the Run Director, but we decided that wasn't in line with our (currently) purist aspirations so myself, David plus pacers Mark & Polly decided to " suck it up" and run round the Estuary - bonus 4 miles. Then a long section on the beach, before final pitstop and a final 9km of cliff top running. We finished bang on 8.5hrs with myself & David first home. There's no element of racing here howeve...
