Navigation

How are we navigating?

It would be slightly tedious to put out course markings for the entire 1,030 mile route, and even more tedious to collect them in, so we are using GPX files for each day instead 😉. These are provided by the Race Director and can be uploaded onto phones and watches.

My primary navigation system will be my watch, a Garmin Fenix 7 Solar Pro. Routes can be uploaded to this via the Garmin app.

As a back-up I will also have the same GPX file loaded up to an app on my phone called Komoot which links to my bone conducting headphones to provide turn-by-turn directions. There are a number of apps that will do similar, the thing that I particularly like about Komoot is that it provides you with very good guidance when you go off-route "Your chosen route is 100 meters to your right". By using this combination, I hope to be able to follow audio directions & cross-checking with my watch, whilst still running and only if there is a real issue, actually get my phone out.

I've used this combination in training using GPX files of parts of the 2024 RunBrit route. In Scotland, in particular the navigation is fairly straightforward most of the time. However some sections eg Strathclyde Country Park through to Milngavie are a bit more intricate, with the route weaving a course along the upper Clyde - that's if you can solve how to get across the Raith Interchange on the pedestrian bridges! 🤔
