Day 24 - Hamilton to Milngavie

A somewhat unorthodox day today. We had the prospect of a fairly straightforward 25 miles across Glasgow, yet still headed off at 7am. From running the route in training, this is had the potential for us to be in Milngavie before noon and before check-in time!

With the prospect of some bigger days to come I opted to walk most of the day.

The early part of the day was along trails and then the Clyde Walkway which remains quite rural until surprisingly close to central Glasgow.

I found the walking quite tiring and by the time I reached central Glasgow felt the need to nip into a shop and purchase a pie & coffee, ahead of our lunch pitstop.

I was just finishing my coffee when I heard a "Hey Martin" in an Aussie voice behind me. It was the irrepressible Greg which was something of a surprise as I knew he wasn't 100%. Without prompt from me he proudly announced "I got a boost! Yeah I found this railway station so I got a boost on a train." Fair play to Greg - for the first couple of weeks he manfully tried to do every mile but once that bubble burst he has clearly been having great fun by doing what he can reasonably manage and getting a "boost" for the balance.

Greg is a resourceful chap and has been boosted now by minibus, train and canal barge (slower than running).

We walked into lunch together. I opted to have a quick look round the excellent and free transport museum (to get other boosting ideas for Greg) before resuming for the afternoon. It's a bit of an odd concept to visit a museum during an ultra but this is no race, so why not?

I caught up with Greg again and we had a pleasant trip up the Kelvin Walkway and through Bearsden.

We arrived at the Premier Inn Milngavie about 2:30pm and thankfully could get into our rooms. Feeling somewhat peckish, a visit to Waitrose followed in the quest to get a few more calories in.

Premier Inn Milngavie feels like very familiar territory having stayed here before, ahead of both walking & running the West Highland Way. That is our challenge for the next three days & I'm looking forward to that. Just hoping my body has enough energy for the task.
