Day 22 - Rest Day New Lanark

Rest Day No 3 - New Lanark Mill Hotel.

Despite the fact we all love running, it is nice to have a rest day.

After last night's evening meal, it was the usual washing drill as 20 runners produced 6 sets of used kit including some damp offerings from the day in the lakes, all of which had been festering in dry bags. How any member of the crew managed to drive the minibus with that lot in, without requiring some sort of breathing apparatus & hazmat suit is beyond me!😉 We do have an incredible crew and they go above & beyond to keep us up & running.

This morning it was another really strong team performance at breakfast. On our running days, we have to balance the need for calories against the fact we are generally running 1/2 hr after breakfast. On rest days there are no such considerations, so most folk going "all in" - cereal, fruit, yogurt, full cooked, pastries etc. Like biblical locusts...

A chilled morning followed and chance to look around parts of this fantastic world heritage site & mill complex founded by Robert Owen.

Calum (son #1) and Hannah (future favourite daughter-in-law) came over for lunch & it was great to catch up with them. They also came with a large volume of cakes, so I set up an impromptu team pitstop to help the team bridge the calorie gap between lunch & afternoon tea!😋

Scoreboard
A quick glance at the scoreboard shows:
Official milage done = 627 (62%)
Actual milage done = 635 (still tracking 8 miles over)
Official milage remaining= 403

Collateral damage - blisters much improved although a small fresh one appeared on Friday. Achilles feeling stronger although will still get it taped as a precaution this week. Lurgy almost gone.😎

Across the team, still 20 of the starting 21 runners are active. Of those, 8 of us have done it all and the majority are on track to exceed the shortest distance between Lands End  & John O'Groats of 874. There is much mutual respect amongst the group irrespective of miles run, as it is evident to all that there are some huge efforts going in, especially from those soldiering on despite carrying injuries. In any normal context these folks might reasonably rest up for a couple of weeks but clearly that is not an option.

The week ahead will be challenging. From Abington we run up to Strathclyde Country Park tomorrow, on Monday through Glasgow to Milngavie before three days on the West Highland Way & a day on the Great Glen Way.

The Clyde again

RunBrit is a bit of a bubble, but outside that the world is a turbulent place it would seem right now. These words from Robert Owen feels as apt today as they were when he wrote them.

Cakes from Calum & Hannah

The cake makers - lovely to see them both
