Day 18 - Kendal to Askham

So before we get into day 18, I should just complete the evening of day 17....

Despite reaching the halfway point yesterday I was a bit fed up last night largely due to a blister on the sole of my right foot. I went to see Mike the medic, and he confirmed it was a bit infected, so he took a scalpel to it and cut off the top to create an open wound and let it drain fully. He patched it up & 24 hours later it is now looking much better (phew).

At dinner we had a fantastic cake to mark the halfway point - made by Annie Rawlinson (RunBrit class of 24). I hold Wales largely accountable for the state of my feet, so I enjoyed eating all of Wales with ice-cream. It lifted the mood a little.

This morning, with blisters patched up we set off from the Youth Hostel in Kendal at 7am. We were just nearing the outskirts of Kendal when I bumped into Scout Adkin, a fellow Moorfoot Runner and current Mountain Running World Champion. It was a joy to chat to her for a couple of minutes and it brightened an otherwise damp morning. Just at the weekend there Scout was winning a World Cup race in Poland(?), and I was struck that even the best in the world have to "suck it up" on a damp day in the lakes.

A mile further on in Burnsall we met Run Brit Bear. Not much else to be said about the morning other than a run / hike in the rain round to Sadgill. This was the only checkpoint of the day so we were issued with lunch & supplies before heading up onto the tops.

As we were heading up high we had to group up & carry full mandatory kit. I joined up with Sarah, Jamie, David & Laura. We basically headed up over Harter Fell to High Street and then descended to Askham. On a good day there would be lovely views, but not today, hence just photo of people.

Another 26 miles in the bag, less than 500 to go, and we are now just a day and a quarter away from Scotland.๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ Looking forward to being joined by Pacer Pete๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฆ๐ŸŸฅ๐ŸŸฆ tomorrow.

A RunBrit cake made by Annie Rawlinson from the 2024 Group. Made to celebrate the halfway mark. Complete with group photo at start & cows!

I particularly enjoyed eating Wales. Goes well with ice-cream๐Ÿ˜‰ and a sort of "sweet" revenge.
